Theatre: where power and love overflow to the people in the audience, and return to the people on stage. Theatre Building embodies the empty space where dreams are made on.
What this is
Theatre Building is an independent project on the architecture of performance spaces — how a room shapes what an audience can see, hear and feel, and what the people who build those rooms decide along the way.
It runs in two parts. A short-form video series poses a question in under a minute. This blog does the work underneath it: the sources, the figures, and the places where published figures disagree with one another.
The project is trilingual. English is published here, Korean at blog.naver.com/theatrebuilding, and Japanese will follow.
Who writes it
SungChul Kim — PhD in Theatre, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Author of Building A Theatre.
- Former Vice President, OISTAT — International Organisation of Scenographers, Theatre Architects and Technicians
- Director, World Stage Design 2009
- President, ITC — International Theatre Consulting
How it is written
- Every figure is traced to a named source with a date.
- Where published sources disagree, both are given with their sources rather than one quietly chosen.
- Diagrams are drawn for this site from published descriptions. Measured drawings are not reproduced.
- When something turns out to be wrong, the correction is printed in the article and in the description of the video it accompanies.
Articles are written by a named author, not generated in bulk. Where a claim could not be verified, the article says so.
